Dr Joseph Hayes is a psychiatrist and epidemiologist in the Division of Psychiatry, University College London. He is currently a Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Career Development Fellow, previously a National Institute for Health Research Biomedical Research Centre Senior Fellow and a Medical Research Council Population Health Scientist Fellow. He is an Associate Editor of the British Journal of Psychiatry and a member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Bipolar disorders. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum Global Future Council for Technology and Mental Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists Sustainability Committee.
His research focuses on health inequalities in severe mental illness, the interface between physical and mental health, pharmacoepidemiology (including drug effectiveness, adverse effects and repurposing) and the aetiology of severe mental illness. He is currently developing machine learning models for personalisation of drug treatment in bipolar disorder using data from the United Kingdom, Sweden, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
